When and Why Should You Use a Protective Furniture Cover?

What exactly does a protective cover do?

A protective cover creates a physical barrier between your outdoor furniture and the elements. This barrier protects against rain, sunlight, dust, bird droppings and other debris that settles on unprotected surfaces. The longer outdoor furniture is exposed to these conditions without protection, the more wear gradually develops.

Sunlight is often underestimated. UV radiation affects fabrics, upholstery and synthetic components, even on cloudy days. A protective cover blocks this exposure and significantly extends the lifespan of the upholstery.

When is a protective cover essential?

There are situations where a protective cover is not optional but essential. The most obvious example is winter. From November through March, most outdoor furniture remains outside without being used every day. During this period, rain, frost and wind have free rein.

There are also plenty of situations outside the winter season where protection is important. A two week summer holiday is more than enough time for bird droppings and fallen leaves to leave stains on cushions. The same applies to a week of continuous rain in spring or a particularly dusty period.

For example, a lounge set that is used every day from May through September still spends around two hundred hours each season sitting outside unused. During all of those hours, a protective cover provides reliable protection without requiring any extra effort from you.

Which outdoor furniture should always be covered?

In principle, every piece of premium outdoor furniture benefits from a protective cover. However, some items need one more than others. Lounge sets with fabric cushions are at the top of the list. Moisture penetrates deep into the filling and can lead to mould that is difficult to remove.

A daybed also deserves extra attention. Its large surface area collects significant amounts of rainwater. After just one prolonged wet period without a cover, the cushions may feel different and the upholstery may begin to fade slightly.

A stainless steel frame is naturally resistant to the weather, but the finish and upholstery still benefit from protection against prolonged exposure to moisture and sunlight. A quality protective cover should completely shield exposed areas such as the armrests and legs.

How do you choose the right protective cover?

The right cover fits the furniture precisely. A cover that is too loose can be lifted by the wind and offers less protection than expected. A cover that is too tight places unnecessary strain on the fabric and is more likely to tear.

Pay close attention to the quality of the cover material. A good protective cover is made from water repellent fabric that is also breathable. Breathability is essential because a completely airtight cover traps moisture underneath, increasing the risk of condensation and mould.

Also look at the fastening system. Zippers, hook and loop fasteners or drawstrings help keep the cover securely in place, even during strong winds.

When should you remove the cover?

A protective cover should not remain on your furniture permanently. Furniture that stays covered continuously has no opportunity to dry if moisture finds its way underneath. This actually increases the risk of mould, which is exactly what you want to avoid.

Removing the cover regularly also allows you to inspect your furniture. Small stains or early signs of wear are much easier to address before they become more serious. Leaving them unnoticed for too long often makes repairs more difficult.

A good habit is to remove the cover during dry sunny weather and replace it in the evening or whenever rain is expected. This allows the furniture to benefit from fresh air while any remaining moisture dries quickly.

Maintaining the protective cover itself

A protective cover also requires regular care. Never store it while it is still damp. This is especially important at the end of the season when you put the cover away with your furniture or move the furniture into a sheltered area.

Clean the cover at least once each season using lukewarm water and a soft brush. Stubborn stains can be treated with a mild cleaning solution. Allow the cover to dry completely before storing it or placing it back on the furniture.

Store the cover in a dry place, either folded or rolled, without compressing it beneath other items. A well maintained cover will last for many seasons and continue to provide excellent water repellent performance. Treat both the cover and your furniture as one complete system because they both deserve the same level of care.
