What makes the poolside environment different?
Unlike a regular patio, where outdoor furniture alternates between wet and dry conditions, a poolside setting is exposed to moisture almost every day. Swimmers, splashing water, and wet pool surrounds ensure that both the frame and upholstery are constantly in contact with water.
Chlorine is chemically aggressive and accelerates the deterioration of paint finishes, adhesives, and fabrics that are not specifically engineered for these conditions. Water also reflects UV rays, exposing outdoor furniture to sunlight from multiple angles at once. As a result, the upholstery of a lounge bed next to a swimming pool experiences significantly higher UV exposure than furniture placed elsewhere in the garden.

The importance of the frame and construction
The frame forms the foundation of every lounge bed. For poolside use, anodised or powder-coated aluminium is one of the most reliable materials available. Aluminium does not react to chlorinated water and is naturally resistant to corrosion. A high-quality powder coating adds another protective layer, allowing the frame to retain its appearance even after years of intensive outdoor use.
Standard steel frames, on the other hand, are far less suitable. Even when powder coated, any small scratch or impact can expose the metal beneath the coating. Chlorine and moisture then accelerate corrosion, allowing rust to spread underneath the finish and gradually weaken the structure.
Aluminium also offers a practical advantage. Most premium aluminium lounge beds weigh between 15 and 25 kilograms, making them easy to reposition as the sun moves throughout the day or when the pool terrace needs cleaning.
Upholstery that withstands poolside conditions
The upholstery is often the first component to show signs of wear when inferior materials are used. Colours begin to fade, stitching weakens, and cushions gradually lose their resilience because they absorb moisture instead of releasing it.
The best solution is upholstery made using solution-dyed fabrics. During this manufacturing process, colour pigments are integrated into the fibres themselves rather than being applied to the surface. This creates fabric that remains colourfast despite continuous exposure to chlorine and UV radiation while maintaining a soft, luxurious feel against the skin.
The filling inside the cushions is equally important. Standard foam retains water and dries slowly, creating the ideal environment for mould and unpleasant odours. Quick Dry Foam or open-cell Dacron fillings actively drain moisture and dry remarkably quickly after rain or splashing water. This means your lounge bed is ready to use again within a short period without removing or storing the cushions.
Size and mobility matter
Poolside furniture is moved more frequently than furniture placed elsewhere in the garden. Shade changes throughout the day, and the surrounding terrace often requires regular cleaning. A lightweight aluminium lounge bed allows one person to reposition it with minimal effort.
When determining the correct dimensions, it is also important to consider circulation space. Allow approximately 80 centimetres between the pool edge and the lounge bed, and at least 60 centimetres between neighbouring lounge beds to maintain comfortable walkways.
The small details that make a lasting difference
The longevity of a premium lounge bed is determined by the details. Rubber feet or wider support plates provide additional stability on wet pool tiles while helping to protect the surface from scratches.
The reclining backrest deserves careful attention as well. Simple adjustment systems using stainless steel pins or locking positions remain reliable for years in humid environments. More complicated mechanisms with numerous moving metal parts are far more susceptible to calcium deposits and wear, resulting in unnecessary maintenance over time.
Seamless or thermally sealed upholstery seams generally outperform conventional stitching under constant exposure to moisture. Integrated drainage openings also prevent standing water from accumulating inside the frame. Although these details are barely noticeable at first glance, they often determine whether a lounge bed lasts five years or fifteen.

The price of a premium poolside lounge bed reflects the quality of its frame, upholstery, and overall construction. Lower-priced models typically rely on cheaper fabrics and lighter materials that struggle to withstand the combined effects of chlorine, moisture, and UV exposure. After only a few seasons, fading fabrics, compressed cushions, and visible wear often become unavoidable.
