What makes an indoor swimming pool so different?

Outdoor furniture experiences alternating periods of moisture and dryness. After rainfall, sunshine and wind naturally dry a lounge bed, allowing materials to recover. An indoor swimming pool creates a completely different environment. Humidity levels typically remain between 60% and 90%, day after day and season after season. There is no wind, no direct sunlight, and virtually no opportunity for materials to dry completely.

Chlorine vapours make these conditions even more demanding. The airborne compounds released from pool water spread throughout the entire room, even several metres away from the pool itself. Over time, they continuously affect upholstery, stitching, and frame surfaces. A lounge bed that performs perfectly beside an outdoor pool for many years may begin to discolour, develop mould, or corrode within a single season indoors if it has not been specifically designed for this environment.

The frame: the foundation of long-term performance

At Dutch Riviera, powder-coated aluminium is the preferred choice for every lounge bed intended for humid environments, and we always recommend this option. Aluminium does not react to chlorinated air and does not absorb moisture. The powder-coated finish adds an additional protective layer that resists both chemical exposure and the wear of daily use while maintaining its appearance without corrosion or fading.

Anodised aluminium offers an even higher level of protection. During the anodising process, the protective layer becomes part of the aluminium itself rather than sitting on the surface. The result is a frame that withstands even the most demanding indoor pool environments while requiring very little maintenance throughout its lifetime.

Standard steel, on the other hand, is simply not suitable, even when protected with a coating. Once that coating is damaged by a scratch or impact, corrosion develops rapidly in a humid, chlorine-rich environment. What begins as a tiny imperfection can spread beneath the coating unnoticed until significant structural damage has already occurred.

The weight of the frame is also an important practical consideration indoors. Pool areas are commonly finished with anti-slip tiles or concrete flooring that can be vulnerable to scratching. An aluminium lounge bed weighing approximately 15 to 25 kilograms can easily be repositioned by one person while placing far less stress on the floor than considerably heavier alternatives.

Upholstery that releases moisture instead of retaining it

Inside an indoor pool area, the upholstery is often the first component to reveal whether the furniture has been built for these conditions. Discolouration, mould, and cushions that remain permanently damp are clear signs that unsuitable materials have been used.

The solution begins with solution-dyed fabrics. During production, colour pigments are integrated throughout each fibre instead of being applied only to the surface. This creates upholstery that retains its colour despite prolonged exposure to chlorine vapours, even in enclosed spaces where fresh air cannot dilute the chemical atmosphere. Surface-dyed fabrics lose their colour far more quickly and are generally unsuitable for indoor swimming pool environments.

The cushion filling is equally important. Conventional foam absorbs moisture and dries slowly, which can result in mould growth inside the cushions where ventilation is limited. Quick Dry Foam or open-cell Dacron fillings actively drain moisture through the cushion and allow it to evaporate through the outer fabric. In an indoor pool area without natural airflow, this difference has a major impact on both comfort and durability.

The stitching also deserves close attention. In permanently humid environments, moisture can penetrate through conventional seams unless they are thermally sealed or stitched using water-resistant thread. Mould often develops first within these seams, remaining invisible from the outside while gradually causing damage inside the upholstery.

The details that determine long-term durability

A lounge bed that continues to perform for many years in an indoor swimming pool stands apart not only because of its materials but also because of its construction details. Rubber feet or wider support plates improve stability on wet anti-slip flooring while protecting the surface from scratches. Narrow, unprotected metal legs are both less stable and more likely to damage the floor.

The reclining backrest should also be carefully engineered. Simple adjustment systems using stainless steel pins or aluminium components continue operating reliably in humid, chlorine-rich conditions for many years. More complex mechanisms with numerous small metal parts are more vulnerable to calcium deposits and corrosion, leading to unnecessary maintenance.

Proper drainage within the frame is another important feature. A sealed base without drainage openings allows standing water to accumulate inside the structure, increasing the risk of mould and hidden internal deterioration that cannot easily be detected during routine cleaning.

Every indoor swimming pool has its own layout. The available floor space, circulation routes, humidity levels, and the number of lounge beds required all influence the ideal configuration. Standard catalogue dimensions rarely fit perfectly within a carefully designed indoor wellness area.
