Waterproof or water-repellent: there’s a difference

Many people use the terms interchangeably, but they don’t mean the same thing. A waterproof material lets no water through at all, like a raincoat with a membrane. A water-repellent material repels water, but isn’t completely sealed.

For outdoor cushions, being fully waterproof is rarely desirable. If water can’t go anywhere, moisture gets trapped between the fabric and the filling. That promotes mould growth and unpleasant odours. A good outdoor cushion has a fabric that repels water and a filling that dries quickly if moisture does get through.

The upholstery effectively repels water, while the filling is composed so that moisture evaporates quickly and the cushions feel fresh again the next morning. What solution-dyed fabrics mean for lifespan

The fabric of an outdoor cushion largely determines how long the cushion looks good. Cheap outdoor fabrics fade quickly from UV radiation and become frayed or dull after a few rainy seasons.

Dutch Rivièra works exclusively with solution-dyed fabrics. With this type of fabric, the colour is processed through the fibre during the production process itself, rather than applied on top of the fabric. The result is a colour that withstands prolonged exposure to sun and rain. The fibre keeps its colour, even after several seasons outdoors.

That’s a deliberate choice rooted in our craftsmanship. We supply furniture meant to last a long time, whether in a busy hotel environment or on a roof terrace with lots of sun hours, and that keeps its appearance season after season.

Quick Dry Foam and Dacron: the filling makes the difference

The fabric is the first line of defence, but the filling determines what happens when moisture does get through. A cushion core of ordinary foam absorbs water like a sponge and dries slowly. In a Dutch summer, with alternating rain and sun, such cushions often stay damp.

At Dutch Rivièra we use Quick Dry Foam and open-structure Dacron. Quick Dry Foam is a foam type with an open cell structure that lets water pass through quickly and releases it just as quickly. Rain passes through and evaporates rapidly once the sun returns. Open-structure Dacron works on a similar principle: the fibres don’t hold onto water but let it escape.

The practical benefit is significant. Guests at a resort or visitors to a beach club don’t have to wait for cushions to dry after a rain shower. Within a short time, they’re pleasant to use again. That’s comfort you notice, without having to think about it daily.

How to prevent mould growth

Mould on outdoor cushions doesn’t just come from rain. It arises from a combination of moisture, warmth and poor ventilation. Cushions that sit on furniture for a long time without air circulation are vulnerable, even if the fabric is high quality.

Material choice already helps a great deal. Solution-dyed fabrics and Quick Dry Foam naturally offer less of a breeding ground for mould than absorbent materials. Still, there are practical habits that make a difference. Store cushions in a dry space during extended absences. Make sure air can circulate under and around the cushions. Stand the cushions on their side after a rain shower, so moisture drains away faster.
