These organisms thrive in damp, shaded environments. Garden furniture that remains outdoors during autumn and winter is particularly susceptible.

Green algae can attach itself to almost any material, including metal frames, teak, wicker, ceramic, and outdoor fabrics. It develops more quickly on rough or porous surfaces than on smooth ones. The longer it is left untreated, the deeper it can penetrate the material.

At Dutch Rivièra, we believe that luxury garden furniture deserves proper care. Removing green algae promptly helps prevent unnecessary wear and keeps your furniture looking its best season after season.

Preparation Is Key

Proper preparation helps prevent scratches and discoloration during cleaning. Before you begin, gather the right supplies. You will need a soft brush, a bucket of lukewarm water, a mild cleaning solution, and a soft cloth.

Remove loose items such as cushions and detachable tabletops before cleaning. This makes the process more efficient and prevents dirt from the frame from transferring onto the fabrics. Clean the cushions separately using a method suitable for the specific fabric.

Whenever possible, clean your furniture on a cloudy day or in the shade. Direct sunlight causes cleaning products to dry too quickly, which may leave streaks or marks. Taking your time will always produce better results.

Removing Green Algae from Different Materials

Stainless steel frames, commonly found on many luxury sun loungers, can be cleaned using a mild soap solution and a soft cloth or sponge. Wipe in the direction of the grain, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry the frame to prevent water spots.

Aluminum frames also respond well to a mild soap solution. Use a soft sponge or brush and clean in the direction of the surface finish. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth afterwards.

Teak furniture requires a different approach. Use a dedicated teak cleaner together with a soft brush, always following the direction of the wood grain. Scrubbing against the grain can damage the wood surface. After cleaning, you can apply teak oil or a teak protector to nourish the wood and slow the return of algae.

Wicker and woven furniture contain small gaps where algae can easily collect. A soft toothbrush or narrow detailing brush is useful for cleaning these hard to reach areas. Avoid using a pressure washer, as it can damage the weave and distort its shape.

Cleaning Cushions and Outdoor Fabrics

Outdoor cushions require extra attention. Green algae often develops on the underside of cushions where moisture remains trapped for longer periods. Remove the cushions from the frame and inspect both sides carefully.

Use a soft brush to loosen the algae while it is still dry before introducing water. This prevents the spores from being rubbed deeper into the fabric. Afterwards, clean the fabric using lukewarm water and a mild cleaner designed for outdoor textiles.

Premium outdoor fabrics are made to withstand regular cleaning without fading or becoming damaged. Always allow the cushions to dry completely outdoors before placing them back on the furniture.

Removing Stubborn Green Algae

Sometimes a mild soap solution is not enough. For stubborn algae, you can use a mixture of water and a small amount of vinegar or a specialized outdoor algae remover. Allow the solution to work for several minutes before gently brushing the surface.

Always test any cleaning product on a small, hidden area first. Some products may react unexpectedly with certain finishes or protective coatings, including cleaners marketed as suitable for all surfaces.

Avoid chlorine based cleaners on metal components. Chlorine can accelerate oxidation and damage protective finishes. For brushed aluminum and powder coated frames, a mild pH neutral cleaner is the safest choice.

Prevention Is Better Than Cleaning

The best way to deal with green algae is to prevent it from developing in the first place. During autumn and winter, protect your garden furniture with breathable covers. These allow moisture to escape while keeping dirt and rain away from the furniture.

Whenever possible, position your furniture in an area with good air circulation. Furniture that remains in deep shade and rarely dries is much more likely to develop algae. If necessary, move it to a sunnier location with better ventilation.

Treat metal frames and wooden components with a protective product at the beginning and end of each outdoor season. This creates a protective barrier that makes it more difficult for algae to attach to the surface. Spending an hour on preventative maintenance at the start of the season can save many hours of cleaning later.

What Is Green Algae and Why Does It Develop?
