What Makes a Fabric Mold Resistant?

After rainfall, remove any excess water from the cushions and allow them to dry completely before placing them inside a protective cover. Wrapping up damp fabric creates the ideal environment for mold growth. Even one hour of drying in direct sunlight can make a significant difference.

Treat your fabrics with a fabric protector once a year. This restores the water repellent properties that gradually diminish over time. A clean, protected fabric allows water to bead on the surface instead of soaking into the fibers, making mold far less likely to develop.

When Mold Does Appear

Finding mold on an outdoor fabric does not necessarily mean the fabric needs to be replaced. In many cases, thorough cleaning is enough to restore it. Acting quickly is the key to achieving the best results.

Prepare a solution of water and a small amount of bleach, using no more than one part bleach to ten parts water. Bleach should only be used on bleach safe fabrics such as solution dyed acrylic. Always test the solution on a small, hidden area first. If you are unsure, choose a specialized fabric mold cleaner instead. Apply the solution to the affected area with a soft brush, allow it to sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and let the fabric dry completely.

Once the fabric has dried, inspect it carefully to ensure all traces of mold have been removed. Any remaining spores can quickly spread again. If the mold has penetrated deep into the fabric or continues to return, replacing the fabric or cushion is the most sensible option.
