Why Regular Maintenance Pays Off

High quality outdoor fabrics are designed to last for many years. However, even the most durable fabric requires regular maintenance to preserve its quality. Dirt that remains on the fabric for an extended period affects the fibers and reduces its water repellent performance.

A thorough cleaning once every season should be considered the minimum. If your furniture is used frequently or has been exposed to prolonged wet weather, more frequent cleaning is recommended. With the right routine, this only takes a small amount of time.

Basic Cleaning Step by Step

Most outdoor fabrics respond well to a simple cleaning routine. Start by removing any loose dirt. Shake out the cushions or brush the surface with a dry, soft brush. This removes sand, dust, and dry leaves without putting unnecessary stress on the fabric.

Next, prepare a solution of lukewarm water and a mild soap. A pH neutral soap or a cleaner specifically formulated for outdoor fabrics is ideal. Dip a soft cloth or brush into the solution and gently clean the fabric using circular motions.

Rinse the fabric thoroughly with clean water afterwards. Any soap residue left behind will attract new dirt. Allow the cushions to dry completely outdoors before placing them back on your furniture or storing them away.

Removing Stains from Outdoor Fabrics

Stains should be treated as quickly as possible. The longer a stain remains on the fabric, the more difficult it becomes to remove. This applies to food stains as well as bird droppings, mud, and oil.

For fresh stains, use a clean cloth to blot away any excess material. Avoid rubbing, as this spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fibers. Then apply a mild soap solution and allow it to work for a short time before rinsing the fabric thoroughly.

For stubborn stains on fabrics such as Sunbrella or Dralon, you can use a slightly stronger soap solution. Dutch Rivièra recommends testing any new cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire fabric.

Machine Washing: When It Is Suitable and When It Is Not

Not all outdoor fabrics are suitable for machine washing. This depends on the specific material and the construction of the cushion. Fabrics such as Sunbrella and many olefin fabrics can be machine washed at a low temperature, provided the covers are removable.

Set the washing machine to a delicate cycle with a maximum temperature of 30°C. Use a mild detergent without bleach or optical brighteners, as these can damage the color and protective coating of the fabric.

Do not overload the washing machine. Fabrics need enough space to rinse properly. After washing, always allow the fabric to air dry. Tumble drying is not recommended for most outdoor fabrics because excessive heat can damage the fibers.

Applying a Fabric Protector After Cleaning

Cleaning is the first step. Applying a fabric protector is the second. Treating your outdoor fabrics with a fabric protector after cleaning helps restore their water repellent properties. This is especially important for fabrics with a surface coating that may have diminished after washing.

A fabric protection spray is easy to apply. Spray the product evenly onto the clean, dry fabric and allow it to absorb completely. The fabric will once again repel water more effectively and become less susceptible to dirt and stains.
